Hey, don’t forget: evaluators are also human beings! Like anyone else in the world, they get annoyed by hard-to-comprehend, redundant texts fragments. Many of us were told to structure a text like this: Intro – main part – conclusion / main message – outro. So, a typical passage may read like this (it is taken from one our older, not very successful proposals):

“…The combination of electro-catalysis and bio-catalysis has been recognized as a potential leading technology for the chemical industry of the 21st century, fostering the application of biocatalysis at an industrial scale. In electro-enzymatic processes, the advantages of electrochemistry (e.g. high energy, atom efficiency, and little/no waste products) are combined with the advantages of bio-catalysis (e.g. mild reaction conditions, high region-selectivity, little/no byproducts).Additionally, electro-chemistry can solve or circumvent thermodynamic challenges observed with oxidoreductases. We even augment this promising technology combination by introducing directly controlled thermal energy. This helps significantly reduce the thermal energy needed without denaturing the enzyme. For this end, we use the unique platform technology of directly heated electrodes for electro-synthesis purposes: Gensoric’s ThermaLab-Technology….”

It’s nice to learn how cool electro-biocatalysis is, but what if you read something like this more than twenty times a day? Have you ever been to a conference on a very specific topic and every single presentation starts with Adam & Eve, even the final speaker? Do you really feel like paying attention to the very last slide when you’ve heard the beginning five times over already? Odds are that you don’t and thereby run the risk of missing something very interesting and cool. And this is what the judges are regularly exposed to!

 

Our recommendations:                                                                               

 

·         1) Put what makes you and your idea unique / your main message at the very beginning of a paragraph.

·         2) Make it one sentence.

·         3) Bold it.

·         4) Use the rest of the paragraph to substantiate the main message.

·         5) One paragraph, one message. Leave some space between the paragraphs.

·         6) Have your main messages correspond with the main requirements of the call.

 

The result is: at the first glace, the reader can get what you are proposing, what makes you unique and whether this is something he or she is looking for. Here is our paragraph from above, slightly refined…

 

We are addressing the key domain of the call: electro-biocatalysis. The combination of electro-catalysis and bio-catalysis has been recognized as a potential leading technology for the chemical industry of the 21st century, fostering the application of biocatalysis at an industrial scale. In electro-enzymatic processes, the advantages of electrochemistry (e.g. high energy, atom efficiency, and little/no waste products) are combined with the advantages of bio-catalysis (e.g. mild reaction conditions, high region-selectivity, little/no byproducts).

 

Our technology thermally raises the activity of enzymes without denaturing them. Electro-chemistry can solve or circumvent thermodynamic challenges observed with oxidoreductases. We even augment this promising technology combination by introducing directly controlled thermal energy. This helps significantly reduce the thermal energy needed without denaturing the enzyme.

 

Did you notice that we did not change the content at all? There is no need to write like a tabloid journalists. Stick to scientific quality. Here are some more suggestions on what we have learned over the last seven years:

 

·         A) Don’t exaggerate.

·         B) Avoid superlative language such as “We are the only ones in the world who do the greatest thing on earth that nobody has ever done before...”. Odds are that you aren’t and such language degrades eventually your credibility.

·         C) If you have to contrast or compare your approach against others / state of the art: draw!
